Question 7
If a6+a4=6 and a6−a4=23, find the arithmetic sequence.
Solution
Let a1 be first term and d be common difference of A.P. As given
a6+a4=6⟹a1+5d+a1+3d=6⟹2a1+8d=6⟹a1+4d=3−−−(1)
Also, we have given
a6−a4=23⟹a1+5d−a1−3d=23⟹2d=23⟹d=13
Using the value of d in (1), we get
a1+4(13)=3⟹a1=3−43=53.
Also
a2=a1+d=53+13=2
and
a3=a1+2d=53+213=73
Hence the required A.P is 53,2,73,….
