Find the first five terms and the sum of an infinite geometric sequence having a2=2 and a3=1
Solution
We first try to have find a1 and r.
We know that an=a1rn−1
therefore
a2=a1r=2....(i)
and a3=a1r2=1...(ii)
Dividing (ii) by (i), we get
a1r2a1r=12⇒r=12,
putting this in (i), we have
a12=2⇒a1=4. a2=a1r=4⋅12=2,a3=a1r2=4⋅(12)2=1. a4=a1r3=4(12)3=12a5=a1r4=4⋅(12)4=14.
The infinite geometric sequence is:
4,2,1,12,14,…
