Solutions of Question 3 of Exercise 4.5 of Unit 04: Sequence and Series. This is unit of A Textbook of Mathematics for Grade XI is published by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Textbook Board (KPTB or KPTBB) Peshawar, Pakistan.

Find the first five terms and the sum of an infinite geometric sequence having a2=2 and a3=1

We first try to have find a1 and r.
We know that an=a1rn1
therefore
a2=a1r=2....(i)
and a3=a1r2=1...(ii)
Dividing (ii) by (i), we get
a1r2a1r=12r=12 putting this in (i), we have
a12=2a1=4a2=a1r=412=2,a3=a1r2=4(12)2=1a4=a1r3=4(12)3=12a5=a1r4=4(12)4=14 The infinite geometric sequence is:
4,2,1,12,14,
