Find the sum of the following arithtical geometrical series 5+73+932+1133+…
Solution
Let S∞=5+73+932+1133+….(i)13S∞=53+732+932+1133+….(ii) Subtracting the (ii) from (i), we get 23S∞=5+23+232+233+…=5+2(13+132+133+…)=5+2131−13 ∵ the series is geometric r=13<1 =5+2⋅13⋅32=5⋅32+32=182=9⇒S∞=9

If the sum to infinity of the series 3+5r+7r2+…∞ is 449, find the value of r.
Solution
Let S∞=3+5r+7r2+…∞....(i) rS∞=3r+5r2+7r3+…∞....(ii)
Subtracsing the (ii) from (i),
we get (1−r)S∞=3+2r+2r2+2r3+…∞=3+2⋅[r+r2+r3+…∞]=3+2⋅r1−r⇒S∞=3+2r1−r But we are given S∞=449 ∴3+2r1−r=449⇒2r1−r=449−3=179⇒18r=17−17r⇒18r+17r=17⇒35r=17⇒r=1735
