Solution. Let A=[2311−12412]|A|=2(−2−2)−3(2−8)+1(1+4)⟹|A|=−8+18+5⟹|A|=15
Question 1(ii)
Evaluate the determinant of the matrix [cosθ−sinθ0sinθcosθ0001].
Solution.
Let A=[cosθ−sinθ0sinθcosθ0001]|A|=cosθ(cosθ−0)+sinθ(sinθ−0)+0⟹|A|=cos2θ+sin2θ⟹|A|=1
Question 1(iii)
Evaluate the determinant of the matrix [i3−2i134012].
Solution.
A=[i3−2i134012]|A|=i(3⋅2−4⋅1)−3(1⋅2−4⋅0)+(−2i)(1⋅1−3⋅0)=i(6−4)−3(2−0)+(−2i)(1−0)=i(2)−3(2)+(−2i)(1)=2i−6−2i=−6 Therefore, the determinant of the matrix [i3−2i134012] is: |A|=−6
Question 1(iv)
Evaluate the determinant of the matrix [2+i1i021−3i16].
Solution.
A=[2+i1i021−3i16]|A|=(2+i)(2⋅6−1⋅1)−1(0⋅6−1⋅(−3i))+i(0⋅1−2⋅(−3i))=(2+i)(12−1)−1(0+3i)+i(0+6i)=(2+i)⋅11−3i+6i2=22+11i−3i+6(−1)(since i2=−1)=22+8i−6=16+8i Therefore, the determinant of the matrix [2+i1i021−3i16] is: |A|=16+8i
