Question 1
The nth term of the sequence is given, find the first 4 terms; the 10th term, a10 and the 15 th term: a15. an=3n+1
Solution. Given an=3n+1 Then a1=3(1)+1=3+1=4a2=3(2)+1=6+1=7a3=3(3)+1=9+1=10a4=3(4)+1=12+1=13 Now a10=3(10)+1=30+1=31a15=3(15)+1=45+1=46. Hence a1=4, a2=7, a3=10, a4=13, a10=31 and a15=46.
Question 2
The nth term of the sequence is given, find the first 4 terms; the 10th term, a10 and the 15 th term, a15. an=3n−1
Solution. Given: an=3n−1. Then a1=3(1)−1=3−1=2a2=3(2)−1=6−1=5a3=3(3)−1=9−1=8a4=3(4)−1=12−1=11 Now a10=3(10)−1=30−1=29a15=3(15)−1=45−1=44 So, the first four terms are a1=2, a2=5, a3=8, a4=11, a10=29 and a15=44.
