Question 5 and 6, Exercise 4.2

Solutions of Question 5 and 6 of Exercise 4.2 of Unit 04: Sequence and Series. This is unit of Model Textbook of Mathematics for Class XI published by National Book Foundation (NBF) as Federal Textbook Board, Islamabad, Pakistan.

Find an arithmetic sequence for a17=40 and a28=73, find a1 and d. Write first five terms of the sequence.

Solution.

The nth term of the arithmetic sequence is given as an=a1+(n1)d Given a17=40a1+16d=40(1) Also a28=73a1+27d=73(2) Now, subtract equation (1) from equation (2): a1+27d=73a1+16d=+4011d=33d=3 Putting the value d in (1) a1+16(3)=40a1=40+48a1=8 Now, a2=a1+d=83=5a3=a2+d=53=2a4=a3+d=23=1a5=a4+d=13=4 Hence the first five terms are 8,5,2,1,4 and a1=8, d=3. GOOD

The fifth term of an arithmetic sequence is 19 and 11 th term is 43. Find the first term and 87 th term.

Solution.

Given: a5=19 and a11=43.

The nth term of the arithmetic sequence is given as an=a1+(n1)d

Given a5=19a1+4d=19(1) Also a11=43a1+10d=43(2)

Now, subtract equation (1) from equation (2): a1+10d=43a1+4d=+196d=24d=4

Putting the value d in (1) a1+4(4)=19a1=1916a1=3

Now, a87=a1+86d=3+86(4)=347 Hence the a1=3 and a87=347. GOOD
