Question 5
Find an arithmetic sequence for a17=−40 and a28=−73, find a1 and d. Write first five terms of the sequence.
Solution.
The nth term of the arithmetic sequence is given as
an=a1+(n−1)d
Given
a17=−40⟹a1+16d=−40⋯(1)
Also
a28=−73⟹a1+27d=−73⋯(2)
Now, subtract equation (1) from equation (2):
a1+27d=−73−a1+−16d=−+4011d=−33⟹d=−3
Putting the value d in (1)
a1+16(−3)=−40⟹a1=−40+48⟹a1=8
Now,
a2=a1+d=8−3=5a3=a2+d=5−3=2a4=a3+d=2−3=−1a5=a4+d=−1−3=−4
Hence the first five terms are 8,5,2,−1,−4 and a1=8, d=−3.
Question 6
The fifth term of an arithmetic sequence is 19 and 11 th term is 43. Find the first term and 87 th term.
Solution.
Given: a5=19 and a11=43.
The nth term of the arithmetic sequence is given as an=a1+(n−1)d
Given a5=19⟹a1+4d=19⋯(1) Also a11=43⟹a1+10d=43⋯(2)
Now, subtract equation (1) from equation (2): a1+10d=43−a1+−4d=−+196d=24⟹d=4
Putting the value d in (1) a1+4(4)=19⟹a1=19−16⟹a1=3
Now,
a87=a1+86d=3+86(4)=347
Hence the a1=3 and a87=347.
