Which term of the sequence −6,−2,2,… is 70?
Solution.
Given −6,−2,2,… is an arithmetic sequence.
Here a1=−6, d=−2+6=4, an=70, n=?.
The nth term of the arithmetic sequence is given as
an=a1+(n−1)d.
This gives
70=−6+(n−1)4⟹70=−6+4n−4⟹70=4n−10⟹4n=80⟹n=20
Hence a20=70.
Question 8
Which term of the sequence 52,32,12,… is −1052?
Solution.
Given: 52,32,12,… is an arithmetic sequence and an=−1052.
Here a1=52, d=32−52=−1, n=?.
The nth term of the arithmetic sequence is given as an=a1+(n−1)d. This gives −1052=52+(n−1)(−1)⟹−1052=52−n+1⟹−1052=72−n⟹n=72+1052⟹n=56
Hence a56=−1052.
