Question 26 and 27, Exercise 4.4

Solutions of Question 26 and 27 of Exercise 4.4 of Unit 04: Sequence and Series. This is unit of Model Textbook of Mathematics for Class XI published by National Book Foundation (NBF) as Federal Textbook Board, Islamabad, Pakistan.

A Ping-Pong ball is dropped from a height of 16ft and always rebounds one-fourth of the distance fallen. How high does it rebound the 6th time?

Solution.

Ball dropped from height = 16ft

Consider a1, a2, a3,... represents heights of the rebounds of the ball, then

a1=16×14=4ft.

Thus the sequence is geometric with r=14.

We have to find a6, where general term of the geometric series is given as an=a1rn1. Thus a6=a1r5=(4)(14)5=1256 Hence, the ball will rebound 1256ft at 6th time.

A city has a current population of 100,000 and the population is increasing by 3% each year. What will the population be in 15th  years?

Solution.

Here, a1=100,000,n=16r=1+3100=1+0.03=1.03 We have an=a1rn1 Thus a16=a1r161=100,000(1.03)15=100,000(155796.74)=155,797 Hence, the population after 15 years will be 155,797. GOOD
