Solution.
Given a1=3 and r=−2. Use the formula
an=a1rn−1.
Then
a2=a1r=(3)(−2)=−6a3=a1r2=(3)(−2)2=3(4)=12a4=a1r3=(3)(−2)3=3(−8)=−24
Hence a1=3, a2=−6, a3=12, a4=−24.
Question 6
Find the first four terms of the geometric sequence. a1=27,r=−13
Solution.
Given a1=27 and r=−13. Use the formula
an=a1rn−1.
Then
a2=a1r=(27)(−13)=−9a3=a1r2=(27)(−13)2=27⋅19=3a4=a1r3=(27)(−13)3=27⋅(−127)=−1
Hence a1=27, a2=−9, a3=3, a4=−1.
Question 7
Find the first four terms of the geometric sequence. a1=12,r=12
Solution.
Given a1=12 and r=12. Use the formula
an=a1rn−1.
Then
a2=a1r=(12)(12)=6a3=a1r2=(12)(12)2=12⋅14=3a4=a1r3=(12)(12)3=12⋅18=1.5
Hence a1=12, a2=6, a3=3, a4=1.5.
